The Torre Santos Mártires (Martyrs' Tower) is located in Algodres, one of the localities forming the Union of Parishes of Algodres, Vale de Afonsinho e Vilar de Amargo, in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. This structure rises prominently in the center of the village, marking its presence in the area known as Largo da Torre (Tower Square).
Situated on a slightly elevated platform, the tower and the attached chapel are a landmark in the local urban landscape. The small churchyard, beautified by a large tree, invites a moment of rest and quiet observation.
This unique architectural complex comprises a medieval watchtower and a 17th-century chapel attached to it. The tower, built of robust exposed granite masonry, with its well-defined quoins, is a testament to its original defensive function, integrating a network of medieval watchtowers in the Côa region.
The chapel, with a longitudinal plan and white walls, features 17th-century religious architecture. Currently, the tower also serves as a clock tower, its mechanism, installed in 1976, marking the hours for the community.
The name "Santos Mártires" (Holy Martyrs) that baptizes this place has its roots in a fascinating tradition. It is said that in 1678, the relics of Saint Eugene and Saint Augustine arrived at this chapel from Rome, an event of great importance that led to the celebration of the first feast in their honor on April 29th of that year.
This story, involving a local abbot and an enigmatic journey to Rome, enriches the cultural identity of the site, making it a point of interest not only for its architecture but also for its profound connection to the beliefs and traditions of the Algodres community, which annually celebrates the arrival of these holy relics.
