The Sabugal Museum is located in the village, in a central and easily accessible area, near what was once the old walled zone. This location allows for integration with the town's historical environment.
From some areas of the museum, it is possible to observe the distinct profile of the castle of the five quinas, which rises above the village's stone houses, framing the local landscape.
The history of the Sabugal Museum began to be written in 1986, although its installation in the building it currently occupies, which maintained its original facade dated 1883, only occurred in 2003. This space was born with a clear purpose: to protect and share the heritage and identity of the people and lands of the municipality.
It is a point of reference for those who wish to better understand the cultural and historical roots of this region, acting in the research, conservation, and presentation of elements that tell its long trajectory.
Inside the Museum, visitors will find a permanent exhibition dedicated to unveiling the traces of human occupation in the Sabugal territory, with a special focus on the Riba Côa area, from its earliest times.
This exhibition gathers a significant selection of archaeological heritage, including artifacts from excavations and local finds. It allows for direct contact with elements that help tell the story of the life of the communities that succeeded each other in this landscape throughout the centuries.
The Sabugal Museum also dedicates specific areas to the presentation of temporary exhibitions. These displays are designed to explore different facets of culture, history, and art, often with a connection to the territory.
The regular programming of these exhibitions ensures there is always something new to discover, complementing the narrative of the permanent collection and offering different perspectives on regional heritage and creativity.
