Prainha das Poças is located in the area of Sagres, belonging to the municipality of Vila do Bispo. It holds a particular position, at the beginning of the eastern side of the notable Ponta de Sagres (Sagres Point), very close to the historic area where the Fortaleza de Sagres (Sagres Fortress) stands.
This beach is nestled within the vast territory of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park), which contributes to the preservation of its natural environment. It is a typical oceanic beach on the Portuguese coast, bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
This small beach is characterized by a stretch of sand, which can be golden in color and fine in texture. However, its visible extent varies significantly with the tides. During high tide, the sand becomes almost entirely covered by water, revealing an area composed mostly of pebbles and rolled stones.
It is at low tide that Prainha das Poças reveals its most distinctive features, including rock formations and the natural pools that give it its name. These small depressions in the rock retain seawater when the tide recedes. The beach also benefits from the shelter provided by the imposing cliffs of Ponta de Sagres, which offer some protection against wind and waves.
Prainha das Poças stands out as a generally tranquil location with low visitor numbers, offering an atmosphere of greater serenity for those seeking a retreat in contact with nature. Its secluded nature is due, in part, to the nature of its access.
Reaching this beach involves descending from the cliff top via paths or rocky slopes. This access requires attention and care, being considered more suitable for those experienced in uneven terrain. The descent itself can be seen as part of the experience of discovering this lesser-known spot.
