Praia do Homem Nu (Naked Man's Beach) is situated on the westernmost tip of Tavira Island, one of the barrier islands that make up the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It is located in the area associated with the Praia do Barril development, belonging to the locality of Santa Luzia, within the municipality of Tavira. Its isolated position, separated from the mainland by the Ria Formosa Lagoon, gives it a distinct character. The most common access is by foot from Praia do Barril, which contributes to its tranquility. From this beach, it is possible to glimpse the Fuseta Bar area and Armona Island in the distance.

An Extensive Natural Sandy Beach

This beach is distinguished by its vast stretch of white sand, extending for more than four kilometers along the island. Its large size ensures there is always ample space available, providing a sense of isolation and direct contact with nature, even during peak months. It is a wild beach, where the dune and coastal landscape remain in a natural state.

Naturist Practice

Historically associated with the practice of naturism, Praia do Homem Nu has been officially recognized for this purpose since 2004. Its more remote location and access, which requires a walk, have made it a sought-after place for those who prefer to enjoy the sun and sea without clothing. This practice has roots on the beach dating back to the 1980s, making it one of the pioneering naturist locations in the region.

The name "Praia do Homem Nu" has origins somewhat lost in time, but one popular story associates it with a castaway who supposedly arrived at this beach with nothing, completely naked. Regardless of historical accuracy, the name eventually became linked to the naturist practice established at the site. Sometimes, this tip of the island is also known as Praia da Barra Velha.
