Situated in the Torralta area, in Alvor, municipality of Portimão, Praia do Alvor occupies the ocean front south of the village. To the west, the transition to the ria (estuary) and salt marsh extends, while to the north, the urban fabric progressively moves away from the sand, leaving space for the dunes.
The setting is open and vast, with an uninterrupted view of the Atlantic. The dune cordon acts as a natural barrier between the beach and residential areas, and the boardwalks rise above the low-lying vegetation, protecting the ecosystem and facilitating access to the sand.
It is a beach with a linear outline and a wide horizon, marked by a very extensive and light-coloured sandy area. The water colour varies between shades of green and blue, creating sharp contrasts with the sand. On days with good visibility, the coastline follows the eye for several kilometres.
In the late afternoon, the low light accentuates the textures of the sand and the small ripples left by the tide, a scene appreciated by those who enjoy long walks and landscape photography.
The slope entering the sea is gentle across most of the beach, alternating areas of fine sand with strips where fragmented shells are found. The width of the sandy area varies with the rhythm of the tides, becoming shorter during spring tides.
The sea can exhibit stronger waves on certain days, typical of this Atlantic exposure. During windy periods, small sand crests form near the dunes.
A network of boardwalks over the dunes allows walking parallel to the beach without stepping on the vegetation. The dune flora, with salt-resistant grasses and plants, fixes the sand and protects the interior.
Near the salt marsh area, the influence of the ria is felt, with calm water surfaces and the regular presence of wading birds. It is a good stretch for observing the dynamics between the sea, the estuary, and the dunes.
The expanse of sand offers space to spread out towels and umbrellas, even during busier times. On hot days, the sand heats up easily, making it comfortable to walk along the boardwalks.
As with the entire open coast of western Algarve, wave strength and wind direction can change throughout the day. The state of the sea and tide conditions the experience near the breaking waves and the available width for walking.
The beach is part of the identity of Alvor, a village with roots connected to the estuary and the sea. The alignment of the boardwalks and the design of the beachfront reflect an attempt to reconcile bathing enjoyment with the conservation of the dune system.
Throughout the year, the atmosphere alternates between tranquility outside the high season and the typical vibrancy of the summer months, always maintaining the open and luminous character that defines this stretch of coast.
