Praia de São Roque is located in the Bairro Operário area, in Lagos, forming part of the vast stretch that constitutes Meia Praia. It is positioned near the entrance to Lagos Marina and the mouth of the Ribeira de Bensafrim. Its location offers a perspective over the bay and the city's port area.
This beach is part of one of the largest sandy areas in the Algarve, extending for several kilometres. It features a wide stretch of golden sand, ideal for long walks or beach activities. The waters that bathe the coast in this area are generally calm, making it an inviting place.
The designation "Praia de São Roque" has historical roots and is still used by those who reside in the area, despite being considered part of Meia Praia. The name refers to the existence of an old hermitage dedicated to São Roque nearby, which no longer exists. In the past, a small watercourse separated this portion from the rest of the sandy area, reinforcing the idea of a distinct area.
A characteristic feature of Praia de São Roque is the presence of a coastal dune system behind the sandy beach. This natural area is protected, and circulation is facilitated by well-delineated wooden walkways, which help preserve local flora and fauna while allowing access to the bathing area.
The quality of the water and infrastructures at Praia de São Roque has been recognised over the years. This distinction, exemplified by awards such as the Blue Flag, is an indicator of the good environmental and safety conditions the location offers to its visitors.
