Praia de Santo António is located at the easternmost point of the Algarve and mainland Portugal, integrated into the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. It marks the coastal limit west of the mouth of the Guadiana River, which establishes the border with Spain, and east of the urban area of Monte Gordo. It is part of the vast Monte Gordo bay. Its natural surroundings are dominated by the imposing presence of the Mata Nacional das Dunas Litorais (National Coastal Dunes Forest), which runs along its entire length.
Praia de Santo António is distinguished by its extensive sandy beach, stretching for approximately 1.8 kilometers. It is a fine, golden sand beach with plenty of space, ideal for long walks along the shore. The waters in this area are generally calm and have pleasant temperatures, being among the warmest in the Algarve. The natural protection provided by its position in the bay contributes to the tranquility of the sea.
One of the striking aspects of Praia de Santo António is its landscape setting. The beach is bordered to the north by the Mata Nacional das Dunas Litorais (National Coastal Dunes Forest), an extensive forest area of stone pines that offers a verdant contrast with the sand and the sea. A low dune cordon accompanies the sandy beach. Access to the beach is via paths and walkways that cross this protected natural area, providing a pleasant stroll before reaching the sea and highlighting the ecological value of the location.
The environmental quality of Praia de Santo António is attested by several distinctions received over the years, such as the Blue Flag and the Gold Flag. These awards are granted in recognition of bathing water quality, beach cleanliness, and available safety conditions and infrastructure. The beach also offers conditions that facilitate accessibility, making it inclusive for visitors with reduced mobility.
