Tavira Island Beach, also known as Praia das Cascas (Shells Beach), is located on Tavira Island, a barrier island integrated into the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It is situated at the eastern end of the island, directly opposite the city of Tavira and the Quatro Águas riverside area.
This geographical position allows visitors, upon approaching the island, to glimpse the characteristic landscape of Ria Formosa, with its channels, extensive salt pans, and associated avifauna, such as black-winged stilts. The beach itself faces south, open to the Atlantic Ocean, while the island's interior margin faces the Ria's channels.
This beach stands out for its considerably extensive sandy area. The available space allows for long walks along the seashore and finding quieter spots, even during peak periods.
The dunes bordering the sandy area are an important natural element of the barrier island's ecosystem. The dune vegetation helps to stabilize the sand and contributes to the preservation of the beach's natural environment.
The beach is known by two names: Praia da Ilha de Tavira, which refers to its location on the island, and Praia das Cascas, a more popular designation. This duality reflects the familiarity and appreciation locals and visitors have for this destination.
On the eastern side of the beach, next to the bar that connects Ria Formosa to the sea, there is a jetty. This element marks the eastern limit of the main bathing area and offers a different perspective on the interaction between the Gilão River estuary and the ocean.
The occupation of Tavira Island dates back, more significantly, to the mid-20th century. Its history is linked to fishing activity, with the initial establishment of fishing communities on the island.
Over time, regulations have been implemented to manage the island's development and protect its natural and scenic characteristics, seeking to maintain a balance between human presence and environmental conservation within the context of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
