The Monte Gordo Boardwalks are located on the beachfront of the town of Monte Gordo, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, in the eastern Algarve. They extend parallel to the coast, between the dunes and the sandy beach, forming a long wooden path that follows the entire bay.
This area is known for its wide stretch of fine sand and its generally calm sea. The proximity to the urban center and the natural setting make the boardwalks a pleasant space for both peaceful strolls and appreciating the coastal landscape.
The boardwalks were built with the aim of protecting the dune cordon, an essential element of the local ecosystem, very sensitive to erosion and trampling. The wooden structure allows access to the beach without damaging the dunes, while ensuring a convenient and safe connection between the sandy beach and the urban area.
In addition to the environmental aspect, they represent a careful coastal management intervention, integrating harmoniously into the natural space. The project also improved accessibility, allowing use by people with reduced mobility.
The route offers a wide view of the Atlantic Ocean and the dunes that delimit the beach. Along the path, it is possible to feel the contrast between the blue of the sea and the golden hue of the sand, in a calm and open environment, marked by the constant sound of the waves and the gentle breeze.
During the day, the place is highly sought after for walking, light jogging, or simple strolls by the sea. At dusk, the sunset over the sand creates a particularly beautiful scenery, ideal for those who appreciate moments of tranquility in contact with nature.
The main boardwalk is about 1.7 kilometers long and is divided into several sections that connect the main accesses to the beach. It has wooden ramps and stairs, resting benches, and stopping areas with direct sea views. The solid construction, well-integrated into the terrain, ensures comfort while walking and contributes to a safe and pleasant experience.
Throughout the route, there are information panels about the dune environment and the importance of its preservation, reinforcing the educational character of the space and raising visitors' awareness for the protection of local biodiversity.
The boardwalk is frequently visited by both residents and tourists, becoming an outdoor meeting point. The large natural terrace that surrounds it offers a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for moments of rest, reading, or simple contemplation of the maritime horizon.
In the calmer months, the space invites serene walks by the sea, while in the summer it gains a livelier atmosphere, following the rhythm of the beach and the movement of the town. It is a place that combines nature, leisure, and well-being, always maintaining respect for the surrounding environment.
