Located in the heart of Lagos' Historic Centre, the Palácio dos Governadores (Governors' Palace) is a central element of the city's old defensive line. It is strategically positioned near the mouth of the Bensafrim River, defining an important area of the walled complex. Its surroundings include a green space, the Jardim da Constituição (Constitution Garden), which enhances its presence in the urban landscape.
The history of the Palácio dos Governadores dates back to very ancient origins, with indications that it was built upon an Islamic alcazaba, which in turn may have succeeded Roman or Visigothic fortifications. Initially an integral part of Lagos' medieval defenses, it was significantly expanded and adapted during the Renaissance period, in the 16th century. It was from the second half of that century that the building acquired its current name, becoming the residence of the governors of the Algarve. However, the devastating earthquake of 1755 caused its almost total ruin, preventing it from being fully restored to its function as a residence. Later, in the 19th century, part of its ruins was adapted into a hospital. It was classified as a National Monument in 1924, a formal recognition of its importance in Portuguese heritage. Since then, the Palace and the adjacent walls have been subject to various conservation and enhancement interventions.
This Palace stands out in Lagos' fortified complex due to its size and the way it reflects successive phases of construction and military adaptation. Its architecture is a testament to the military and residential evolution of the era, combining defensive robustness with the dignity of a center of power. Its strategic position not only ensured the protection of the urban core but also controlled access to the old river quay, a vital point for trade and defense. The Palácio dos Governadores is today considered a cornerstone of Lagos' built heritage, not only for its rich history but also for its fundamental role in defining and organizing the city's historic center, inviting contemplation of Lagos' urban and military evolution.
