The Aldeia Nova Interpretive Trail is located in the Monte Fino area, a transition point between the urban environment of Monte Gordo and the nature of the National Forest of Coastal Dunes. Located in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, this trail is on the outskirts of the town, offering easy access to a significant natural space. Its position allows visitors to enjoy the proximity to both the coastal landscape and the interior of the forest.
Approximately 1.5 kilometers long, this circular trail unfolds along a predominantly unpaved path, accessible on foot or by bicycle. Along the trail, ten observation stations are marked, inviting a leisurely exploration of the surrounding environment. The forest hosting the trail has a peculiar history: it was planted in the 19th century, mainly with pine trees, with the purpose of containing the advance of coastal dunes, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the coastline.
Additionally, elements such as firebreaks, vegetation-free strips that serve as barriers against fires, reveal the importance of forest management in the area. An artificial lake, created with the same protective intent, also enriched the forest's biodiversity, attracting new species of fauna and flora.
The Aldeia Nova Trail offers opportunities to observe the region's biological diversity. Among the characteristic vegetation, dominated by pine trees, it is possible to discover various bird species. At the fourth station of the trail, there is a dedicated observation post where birds such as the European greenfinch, the European goldfinch, or the azure-winged magpie can be spotted, lending color and sound to the landscape.
The forest is also home to various reptiles, some more discreet and difficult to find. One of the most notable inhabitants is the chameleon, a species present in this area since the early 20th century. Although it is an elusive animal, its existence underscores the ecological richness of this coastal ecosystem. Closer to the sea, the dunes shelter plants such as European beachgrass, sea holly, and sea daffodil, each adapted to this sandy environment.
One of the distinctive features of this trail is its direct connection to the coast. The trail leads to a wooden walkway that extends towards the beach, providing inviting access to the sea. Along this transition, different types of dunes and the vegetation that consolidates them can be observed, witnessing the natural dynamic between the pine forest and the ocean.
For those seeking a moment of pause, station seven of the trail features a large stone pine offering shade and wooden benches, ideal for resting. At the end of the circular trail, a picnic area awaits, a quiet and shady space, perfect for a picnic or simply to prolong contact with nature and the tranquility of the forest.
