Located in the center of Faro, this church is an important historical and religious landmark of the city.
The church was initially built as a small hermitage by mariners. In the 16th century, it was expanded and became the seat of the Parish. After the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt.
The main entrance is framed by four Ionic columns, which support a cornice and a niche containing the statue of Saint Peter.
The interior has three naves and a chancel composed of the main chapel and two side chapels. The main chapel is decorated with an altarpiece from the late 17th century, one of the earliest examples of the Baroque style in the region.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Victory is famous for its Rococo altarpiece. Other points of interest include the tiles in the Chapel of Souls and the 17th and 18th-century sculptures adorning the altars.
The church houses a valuable documentary archive with records dating from the first half of the 17th century, offering a rich source of local history.
