The Church of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo), also known as the Carmo Church (Igreja do Carmo), is an important religious monument located in Largo do Carmo, in the city of Faro.
The church was founded in 1713 by Bishop D. António Pereira da Silva, within a 17th-century walled area. Friar Manuel da Conceição was responsible for the initial design of the church, which became the home of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The church underwent several construction phases. The original facade and central structure were demolished, and the new, larger construction was undertaken from 1747 by the master mason Diogo Tavares. The west tower was completed in 1878, and the east tower was finished in the early 19th century. The west tower features a carillon of 9 bells cast in 1876.
The church has a single nave with a chancel and four side chapels. The facade is a fine example of Baroque architecture, featuring symmetrical characteristics in the King John V style. Notable decorative elements include Corinthian columns, niches with statues of Saint Elias and Saint Teresa, and ornate relief details.
Inside the church, the azulejo tilework and gilded woodwork are noteworthy, created by the finest sculptors of the region, such as Gaspar Martins, Manuel Martins, and Miguel Nobre. Also deserving mention are the ornamentation of the sacristy, the Chapel of Bones adjacent to the church (built in 1816), and the collection of images from the Triumphal Procession (Procissão do Triunfo).
The Carmo Church is classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público), recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
