The Church of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located near the Convent of Carmo, in the parish of Santa Maria, in Tavira.
The construction of the church began in 1744, commissioned by the members of the Third Order of Carmo. The facade was completed in 1792. The building features a baroque portico and a Latin cross plan, with a predominantly Rococo style interior.
Along the nave, there are six side chapels, each with its own history and devotion. Among them are the chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elijah, the founder of the Order of Carmo, and the chapel dedicated to Saint Teresa of Ávila. The chapels of Saint Albert and Saint Efigenia are opposite each other, and there are also the chapels of Saint Anthony and Our Lady of the Conception.
Near the triumphal arch, the altarpieces of Senhor dos Passos and Nossa Senhora das Angústias stand out.
The main highlight of the church is the altarpiece of the Main Chapel, where there is a painting on the ceiling with a false architectural representation and a central canvas that illustrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel handing the scapular to Saint Simon Stock.
The paintings that decorate the interior of the church are by José Ferreira da Rocha and Joaquim José Rasquinho.
The Bishop of Faro, Dom Inácio de Santa Teresa, is buried in the church.
