The Igreja da Misericórdia de Tavira is located in the city of Tavira, in the parish of Santa Maria and Santiago, integrated within the Santa Casa da Misericórdia complex.
The church was built between 1541 and 1551, commissioned by the Misericórdia de Tavira. The project is authored by the architect André Pilarte, who also collaborated in the construction of the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
Since 1943, the church has been considered a Property of Public Interest, standing out for its historical and architectural importance.
In Renaissance style, the church has three naves and no Main Chapel. The ceiling is supported by eight columns with Renaissance capitals.
The church is decorated with 18th-century tile panels, in shades of blue and white. These tiles represent the 18 Works of Mercy, divided into spiritual works, corporal works, and scenes from the life of Christ.
The church's façade is one of the best examples of the Renaissance in the Algarve. The main portico features a round arch, with decoration inspired by Italian art. Above the arch, there is the image of Our Lady of Mercy, flanked by two angels, with the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The coat of arms of Tavira is also visible.
