The hermitage is located in Largo de São Luiz, in the village of Alte, in the municipality of Loulé, Algarve. This space is situated in a tranquil area, characteristic of the village, surrounded by traditional buildings and a small square with trees that provide a serene atmosphere. The location offers a moment of pause, nestled among typical Algarvian houses, with easy access to the chapel's doorstep.
The Hermitage of São Luís originated in the early 15th century, linked to the figure of Álvaro Mendes de Ribadeneyra, the 6th lord of Alte. The site may have previously been a Muslim mosque, which reveals the complex cultural history of the region during the Reconquista period.
The chapel was dedicated to Saint Louis, and its construction reflects the transition between Islamic and Christian influence in the region. According to local tradition, the choice of dedication to Saint Louis originated from a story involving the son of the lord of Alte and two bears, symbolizing protection and a memorable event for the community.
The hermitage features a simple structure, consisting of a single nave. The façade stands out with a popular Baroque-style frontispiece and a central portal topped by a window with a unique decorative element: three concentric circles with a six-pointed star at the center. Inside, a small dome is located next to the main altar.
The main altar is decorated with gilded Baroque carving, which enhances the simplicity and rigor of the architecture. The interior contains four 18th-century paintings by a local artist, restored in the late 20th century, which add historical and artistic value to the chapel.
The surrounding area of the hermitage invites contemplation and tranquility, with the square around it offering shade and a serene meeting point in the village of Alte. The simplicity of the construction contrasts with the Baroque details of the interior, creating an atmosphere that combines history, art, and serenity.
Although not always open to the public, the hermitage maintains a careful state of conservation, allowing for an appreciation of its facade and immediate surroundings, which reflect the cultural and religious identity of the local community.
