This church is one of the first stone buildings in the city of Olhão. It is located at the confluence of Rua Capitão João Carlos Mendonça and Rua da Soledade. Its construction dates back to the mid-17th century, but the name of the master builder is unknown.
The church has a single nave and a total of five altars. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Solitude, and the side altars represent the Lord of the Afflicted, Saint Clare, Saint Lucy, and Saint Sebastian. The façade is decorated with simple ornaments, highlighting a large dome.
The façade includes a crowned portal and a window with a small pediment. Outside, a dome of simple design is visible. At the entrance, there is a well covered by a slab.
The church has undergone several modifications, notably after the 1755 earthquake. More recently, it underwent restoration and preservation in 2004.
The church was known locally as the "Church of the Dead" because it was the place where corpses were veiled. Currently, regular prayers are no longer held here, and it is used as a funeral chapel.
For tourists interested in history and sacred art, the hermitage offers a space for reflection, with a tranquil atmosphere and elements of great religious value.
