The building is located on Rua Henrique Calado, in an old area of Albufeira where the traditional layout of narrow streets and low-rise houses is still preserved.
The surroundings are characterised by simple constructions, with whitewashed walls and stone elements, creating an atmosphere that reflects the town’s past.
Dating back to the 15th century, this building is a rare example of Albufeira prior to the 1755 earthquake, having been one of the few to withstand the destruction caused by that event.
Over the centuries, it played important social support roles, sheltering travellers and those in need, with assistance provided by the Misericórdia, which offered lodging, food, and clothing.
This is a single-storey building of great simplicity, notable for its pointed arch doorway, a typical element of medieval architecture. The stone frame features a strong and well-defined finish.
Above the door, an old and heavily worn plaque is visible, suggesting the existence of an original inscription that is now almost illegible. The white façade, contrasting with the stone and wooden door, reinforces the building’s traditional character.
Over the years, the building has been adapted for different uses, also serving functions related to public health. It is currently still associated with local services, preserving its original structure.
Despite these functional changes, it retains its symbolic value as a place of shelter and community support throughout Albufeira’s history.
The building’s simplicity and its integration into the street make it an interesting point for observing old architectural details, particularly the pointed arch doorway and the stone framing.
It is a clear example of how modest structures can hold significant historical and cultural value, reflecting past practices of solidarity and social organisation.
