Convent of Saint Anthony of the Capuchins (Faro) or Convent of the Capuchins

Category: Religious Architecture > Convent

District: Faro > Faro > Faro > Centro

Location

The Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos is situated on the outskirts of the city of Faro, very close to the old 17th-century walls, although outside its perimeter. It is located in a quiet area, surrounded by residential areas and some green spaces, which contribute to a calm environment, away from the more bustling urban centre.

This position allows for easy connection to the historic centre, but also offers a more serene experience, where visitors can appreciate the convent's surroundings without the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Historical Context

Founded in the 17th century, the convent was erected on land donated for this purpose, initially serving a religious function. With the political and social changes that occurred in the 19th century, particularly the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, the convent lost its original purpose.

In the 20th century, the building underwent significant adaptations, having been used by the Republican National Guard and later transformed into a prison. This trajectory gives the space a history marked by different uses, reflecting important transformations in local and national life.

Architecture and Environment

The convent stands out for its small cloister, a simple and harmonious space that maintains the typical serenity of old monasteries. The annexed church features an interesting decorative ensemble in Baroque style, with gilded woodwork and tiles that illustrate the artistic richness of the era.

Despite the alterations it has undergone over the centuries, it retains the austere and contemplative atmosphere characteristic of conventual buildings, offering a pause from the city's agitation.

Current Function

Currently, the church of the Capuchos Convent is dedicated to funerary purposes, maintaining a restricted religious use and reflecting its historical connection to the practices of the local community. The rest of the building preserves traces of its various phases of use, becoming a living testament to Faro's urban and social evolution.
