Located on Rua de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the Convent of Santo António is an important religious monument in the city of Loulé, Algarve, Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1692 to replace a previous convent built in 1546.
The convent mainly follows the plain style (Estilo Chão), characterized by its sobriety and simplicity, according to the guidelines of the Franciscan Order. The main facade is symmetrical and has few decorative elements.
Much of the complex is in ruins, except for the old church, which has been restored and currently functions as a cultural space. The cloister maintains its original appearance, with few decorative details.
The convent church has a simple facade with a round arch portal. Inside, there is an elongated nave and several altarpieces with images of saints, including Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Anthony, Saint Ursula, and Our Lady of Remedies.
The convent suffered significant damage in the 1755 earthquake. After the earthquake, reconstruction and expansion works were carried out, including the addition of a dome over a side chapel.
In 1834, as part of the process of extinguishing religious orders, the convent was closed and subsequently used as a factory, residences, and for other purposes.
In 1984, the convent was officially classified as a Property of Public Interest, ensuring its protection and preservation.
The convent church was restored in the 1980s and currently hosts cultural events. It has hosted plays, photography exhibitions, and other artistic exhibitions.
There are plans for the recovery of the convent, transforming it into a quality hotel unit with cultural spaces. The creation of an interpretive center of the religious cult of the Soberana Mãe (Sovereign Mother) and a Conservation and Restoration Center dedicated to sacred sculpture and painting is also planned.
In 2019, the convent was used as a setting for the British film "Miss Willoughby and Bentley", highlighting its historical and architectural importance.
