Located in the picturesque village of Corotelo, in Fonte do Touro, within the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, Casa da Avó Generosa is nestled in an area of the Algarve that harmoniously transitions between the barrocal (scrubland) and the initial slopes of the mountains. This geographical setting offers a tranquil backdrop, distinct from the coastal hustle and bustle, and reveals a more genuine and rural facet of the region. Visitors will encounter a landscape dotted with cork oaks, carob trees, and orchards, where the pace of life unfolds in a calmer and more contemplative manner.
Casa da Avó Generosa is a space designed to preserve and share the memory of a time and way of life that shaped the local identity. Upon crossing its threshold, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the daily life of yesteryear, understanding how past generations inhabited and related to their environment. Each room, each carefully displayed object, tells a story, allowing for a deep comprehension of the traditions, customs, and ingenuity that characterized the people of this Algarvian region.
In terms of architecture, Casa da Avó Generosa is a representative example of the traditional civil architecture of the region. Its walls, often whitewashed, and its tiled roof reflect the simplicity and functionality that guided the vernacular constructions of the Algarve. This house-museum is not just a repository of artifacts but also, in itself, a heritage element that illustrates the adaptation of dwellings to the climate and available materials, bestowing upon it an authenticity and intrinsic value within the context of vernacular architecture.
