Situated in the Fishermen's Quarter, Albufeira's Old Town represents the historic heart of the locality. It is located directly by the coast, with easy access to Fishermen's Beach. To reach the sand, visitors can opt for a tunnel through the rock or use the Peneco Lift and staircases that connect the urban area to the beach, offering wide perspectives over the sea and the cove.
Albufeira Old Town maintains an atmosphere that evokes its history as an old fishing village. The layout of the streets, many of them narrow and cobbled with mosaic patterns, invites a peaceful stroll. Traditional houses, characterized by their whitewashed or brightly coloured facades, give the place a unique character. In the urban landscape, buildings such as the Clock Tower and the Main Church stand out as historical and architectural landmarks.
The heart of the Old Town is the main square, a public space with trees that invites observation of the neighbourhood's daily life. The atmosphere oscillates between the tranquility of the small alleys and the buzz of the square. The proximity of Fishermen's Beach allows visitors to observe the activity of fishermen and their colourful boats, testaments to the strong connection of the place to the sea. For those interested in art, the Pintor Samora Barros Art Gallery hosts exhibitions. A building that formerly functioned as a fish auction site remains as a reminder of Albufeira's fishing tradition.
