Merchant's Beach

Category: Nature > River Beach

District: Évora > Mourão > Alto dos Cílios

Location

Praia do Mercador stretches along the banks of the Alqueva lake, next to the small village of Alto dos Cílios, in the municipality of Mourão.

It is found shortly after the bridge that gives access to Mourão, inserted in a landscape where the horizon blends between the Alentejo plains and the tranquil surface of the reservoir.

Landscape and Environment

The sandy area appears with a narrow strip of sand, and the low-lying vegetation reaches almost to the water's edge, giving it a very rustic character.

The waters have a gentle slope, suitable for those who prefer bathing without deep dives, and the rocky outcrops that emerge near the waterline create a unique setting for photographic records.

Practical Recommendations

There are no facilities on site, so it is important to bring water, sunscreen, and everything necessary to ensure comfort by the water.

Some visitors mention the occasional presence of waste on the banks, so bringing a bag to collect your own litter helps to preserve this natural space.

Tranquil Environment

Being little frequented, the beach offers a serene environment, ideal for those seeking a moment of calm away from urban areas.

It is common to find people who bring dogs, which circulate freely here and enjoy exploring the banks covered with grass and shrubs.
