The Fresco Museum is located in the Castle Area, in Monsaraz, one of the oldest and most emblematic villages in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Situated in Largo Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira, the building is part of the historic walled complex, offering a picturesque setting with schist streets and open views over the Alentejo region and the large Alqueva lake.

The museum occupies the former Town Hall and Courthouse of the village, a Gothic building from the 14th century, built during the reigns of D. Dinis and D. Afonso IV. The property, which also served as a prison, preserves medieval architectural features, such as mullioned windows and an ogival doorway, maintaining its original appearance even after the 1755 earthquake.

Origin and History

For centuries, the building was the center of Monsaraz's administrative and judicial life. In 1958, during restoration work, an accident revealed what would become its greatest treasure: a fresco hidden behind a brick wall. This discovery unveiled a unique work in Portugal, of a secular theme, representing the allegory of Justice. Painted at the end of the 15th century, the composition survived almost intact thanks to its long concealment.

The fresco, which adorns the former courtroom, is often compared to the panels by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Siena, due to the way it addresses the values of justice and corruption. Its artistic and historical value led to the creation of the Fresco Museum in 2010, which today presents thematic exhibitions related to local history and culture.

The Fresco of the Good and Bad Judge

The mural painting is divided into two registers. In the upper part, Christ appears in majesty, seated on the terrestrial globe, flanked by prophets holding the symbols of Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. This panel refers to divine, incorruptible, and eternal justice.

In the lower part, the theme is human justice, portrayed with striking symbolism. In the center, the Good Judge appears serene and dignified, crowned by the figures of Justice and Mercy, holding the red rod of municipal magistracy. Beside him, the Bad Judge presents two faces and a broken rod, a symbol of corruption and bribery, while a demon whispers in his ear. Surrounding them, secondary characters, defendants, scribes, and witnesses complete the trial scene, revealing the civil life of the period.

Atmosphere and Experience

Despite its modest size, the Fresco Museum offers a tranquil and intimate atmosphere, ideal for those who appreciate art and history. The main room, simple and cool, highlights the mural as the central piece, accompanied by informative panels that contextualize its discovery and interpretation.

The visit allows one to understand how Monsaraz was, over the centuries, an important administrative and judicial center. The space combines the charm of medieval architecture with the expressive power of a painting that, despite the centuries, continues to speak about universal themes: justice, morality, and human nature.
