The Hermitage of Saint Anthony is situated in the serene locality of Vale Flores, within the municipality of Mora, which in turn is part of the vast and characteristic district of Évora. Its position, framed by the tranquility of the Alentejo landscape, provides a calm atmosphere and invites a visit to appreciate the essence and quietude of this region, a peaceful retreat in the heart of the Alentejo.
This unique building has its historical roots in the year 1656. Its construction was driven by the Chancellery of the Order of Avis, with the project's realization made possible by a generous monetary donation, the origin of which remains anonymous. Over the centuries, the hermitage has established itself as a landmark for faith and pilgrimage, witnessing the devotion of countless visitors and maintaining an intrinsic connection to its past.
The Hermitage of Saint Anthony displays an architecture that reflects its era and function, with features that can be attributed to vernacular, Mannerist, and Proto-Baroque styles. Its exterior features generally sober and unpretentious lines, heralding an interior that, although modest in size, possesses a remarkable uniqueness. The space is designed with a single nave, which feels welcoming and leads directly to the chancel. The structure is complemented by a bell tower and a sacristy, elements that enrich the composition. On the main altar, traces of old artistic interventions can be found, namely mural paintings, which were later replaced by a wooden altarpiece, also with clear Mannerist influences.
Recently, the Hermitage of Saint Anthony underwent a major restoration effort, a concerted effort aimed at ensuring the preservation of its structure and undeniable cultural value. This rehabilitation was made possible through fundraising by the local Parish, which organized various cultural activities for this purpose, and also had the significant support of the municipality. Such initiatives demonstrate the community's strong commitment to safeguarding and valuing this very relevant element of its heritage.
