The name of the square honors Anastácio Francisco Pires, a popular poet born on August 26, 1924, in Monte do Carril, the village of Orvalhos, municipality of Alandroal. The simple marble plaque, framed by a blue border, recalls the link between the material heritage and the immaterial legacy of the village. This symbolic gesture reflects the community's appreciation for its names and traditions, valuing the word and artistic expression as an essential part of its history.
A respected figure in the district of Évora, Anastácio Pires distinguished himself by his ability to transform the daily lives of the Alentejo people into spontaneous and authentic verses. He completed primary education at the age of 11 and soon began working in the fields, later alternating with civil construction. Despite limited formal education, he revealed a deep love for reading and poetry, cultivating a self-taught background that allowed him to develop a unique literary sensibility.
Among his favorite authors were Bocage and António Aleixo, evident references in his writing. His poetic production, vast and diverse, covered traditional forms such as quatrains, décimas, quintilhas, and sextilhas, exploring themes ranging from humor and social criticism to philosophical reflection on life and death.
Anastácio Pires also collaborated with the Rancho Folclórico "Espiga de Trigo" de Hortinhas (Folk Group "Wheat Ear" of Hortinhas), writing lyrics that contributed to the preservation of Alentejo musical traditions.
During his lifetime, his poems were included in regional anthologies, consolidating his name among the popular poets of the municipality of Alandroal. He passed away on May 27, 1996, victim of a prolonged illness, without having seen a complete work published.
Official recognition came in 2008 when he received the Municipal Merit Medal of Alandroal, in the silver grade. In 2012, sixteen years after his death, part of his collection was featured in the documentary "Nós somos todos iguais" (We are all equal), which brought together Portuguese popular poets and musicians, perpetuating his contribution to the country's oral and literary culture.
In September 2017, the Alandroal Municipal Council published, through Edições Colibri, the book Findei os meus Dias - Cá deixei para alguém ler (I Ended My Days - Here I left for someone to read).
Anastácio Pires represents a central figure in 20th-century Alentejo popular poetry. His work, rooted in tradition and sensitive to the human and social issues of his time, is a valuable testament to the soul and identity of the Alentejo people.
