Located in Évora Monte, in the municipality of Estremoz, the Nascente de Parrais is nestled into a schist hillside, in an area of low scrub and pine forest. The place is discreet and shaded, with spontaneous vegetation surrounding the mine's mouth.
The setting is clearly rural. Earthy trails, clearings, and gentle slopes dominate the terrain, creating a silent environment where the sound of water and the smell of damp earth stand out.
This is an old spring water catchment, used communally for daily supply and support for agricultural activities. The structure follows traditional Alentejo solutions for water collection and conduction, utilizing the hillside's water table.
Without decorative elements or inscriptions, its importance lies in its utilitarian role and the memory of water use in the rural environment, bearing witness to simple and effective water management practices.
The entrance features a low, irregular arch carved into the schist stonework. Inside, a small, dark gallery can be observed, covered by slabs, with damp walls coated in moss. The floor reveals pebbles, leaves, and calcareous deposits formed by water percolation.
Around the mine's mouth, ferns and riverside plants grow, taking advantage of the constant moisture. The contrast between the green of the moss and the dark tone of the stone gives the ensemble a very distinct character. The floor can be slippery, and the interior is poorly lit.
The site maintains a sense of coolness throughout the year, enhanced by the shade and water evaporation. The silence is only interrupted by birds and insects, creating a tranquil and secluded atmosphere.
On days with soft light, the texture of the stones and the vegetal coating becomes more pronounced, highlighting the perception of the space and the continuity between the spring and the hillside.
The frontal perspective of the entrance, with the moss-covered arch, results in expressive images due to the interplay of light and shadow. Approaching the mine's mouth allows for capturing interesting details such as the emerging water, the schist patterns, and the small plants colonizing the cracks.
Close-up shots well reveal the texture of the rocks and the intense green hue of the mosses, while wider frames show the integration of the spring into the hillside and surrounding vegetation.
