The Chafariz das Bravas is located in the heart of the historic city of Évora, more specifically in Largo das Bravas, a tranquil square that reflects the essence of the Alentejo atmosphere. Its location invites contemplation of daily life in Évora, blending harmoniously into the historic urban fabric. This fountain is a discreet yet significant element in the city's landscape, marking one of its most genuine and welcoming corners.
Built in the 16th century, the Chafariz das Bravas played a crucial role in supplying water to the population of Évora. In its time, its presence was of vital importance to the daily life of Évora's inhabitants, serving as a meeting point and a place to collect water, which was essential for families and the functioning of the city.
It stands as a silent testament to the needs and ingenuity of past eras, where water was a precious commodity and its distribution, a municipal priority.
Its architecture is marked by simplicity and sturdiness, typical characteristics of public fountains of that era. The fountain features a rectangular tank structure, with spouts that once gushed fresh water from the galleries that supplied the city.
Although it does not boast grand ornaments, its sober and functional form is an example of practical and durable architecture, designed for utility. The name "Bravas" is shrouded in some uncertainty, often associated with the resilience of the women who came there to fetch water, or perhaps to the strength and abundance of its flow, giving the place a dimension of symbolism and local legends that endure over time.
