The Mother Church of Cabeção, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Purification, stands in the tranquil locality of Cabeção, in the municipality of Mora. It is specifically located in Bairro Doutor João Lopes Aleixo, an area that is part of the village's urban fabric, being one of its most emblematic and easily recognizable buildings.
The history of the Church of Our Lady of Purification in Cabeção is a reflection of the centuries it has endured. Records indicate its existence as early as 1279, when it stood on lands donated to D. Constança, natural daughter of King D. Dinis. Over time, its dedication changed, starting with Saint Mary, then moving to Our Lady of Conception, until its current designation. The building seen today is neither the original structure nor the rebuilt temple of the 16th century, but rather the result of multiple remodelling efforts that have given it its current appearance, particularly visible in the marks from the late 17th century. The 1755 earthquake caused significant damage, leading to the disappearance of many earlier architectural features. Structural interventions carried out from the 1950s onwards contributed to its present form.
Among the most prominent elements in the church is the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos. This chapel, dating back to the time of Queen D. Maria I, is a space of great beauty and significance. Its interior is entirely adorned with intricate gilded carving, covering the round ceiling and walls, exhibiting a fascinating transitional style between Rococo and Neoclassical. For the community of Cabeção, this chapel holds a value of deep devotion, being a testament to the local faith and tradition that remain alive throughout generations.
