The Triumphal Arch is located next to the Portas do Raimundo, outside the city walls of Évora, in a transitional area between the historic centre and its surroundings. It stands near a roundabout, surrounded by landscaped spaces and pedestrian paths that invite a short stop.
The setting combines urban and natural elements, with trees, Mediterranean vegetation and open areas that allow the monument to be observed from different angles.
This contemporary work was created by the sculptor João Cutileiro and installed in 2005. It evokes an ancient arch that once existed in the city and was demolished in the 16th century by order of Cardinal D. Henrique.
Rather than a literal reconstruction, the monument works as an artistic interpretation of that historical memory, linking past and present through a modern sculptural language.
The arch stands out for its solid structure, built with marble blocks of different tones from areas such as Borba, Estremoz and Vila Viçosa. The stones display varied colours and textures, creating an irregular and expressive visual effect.
At the top, the semicircular arch contrasts with the more massive and fragmented base, giving the impression of a reinterpreted ruin. The composition conveys both solidity and fragmentation, suggesting the passage of time.
Set in an open space, the monument gains particular emphasis in natural light, especially towards the end of the day, when shadows highlight the relief of the stones. The calm surroundings reinforce the contemplative character of the place.
The reading of the arch may vary depending on the observer’s perspective. For some, it is a reinterpreted historical symbol; for others, a contemporary piece that engages with the urban landscape and the city’s memory.
