Located in the locality of Praia de Buarcos, in Figueira da Foz, Parque das Abadias extends along a valley, organically integrated into the urban environment. Its position, at the base of a west-facing slope and close to the coast, offers a green oasis that stands out in the area's built fabric.
Parque das Abadias was conceived in the 1970s by architects Alberto Pessoa and, in particular, by landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles. This project stands out for its modernist approach and its ecological concerns, which were pioneering for the time. The design prioritizes pedestrians, creating a space where nature is thoughtfully integrated into the urban landscape, aiming for a harmonious balance.
The heart of the park is a vast lawn that stretches through the valley, cut by a stream that meanders along its central axis. The water's edges are enriched with vegetation typical of humid environments, such as alders and poplars. Further from the stream, species adapted to drier soils are found, including lime trees, holm oaks, and oaks. One of the most striking visual features is the large palm trees, some of which predate the park's creation, that punctuate the landscape and give it a distinctive appearance. A significant portion of the area is also occupied by a dense forest with ancient trees.
The park is traversed by macadam pedestrian paths that follow the stream and invite leisurely strolls. Along the route, several wooden bridges allow crossing the stream, connecting different banks of the park. For those looking to stay active, there are wooden fitness trail stations available, as well as courts dedicated to sports such as basketball, tennis, football, and rollerblading, making it a versatile leisure spot.
In Parque das Abadias, a bronze bust can be found in honor of Dr. António dos Santos Rocha, an important figure for Figueira da Foz. The inscription on its pedestal recalls his contribution to the city. Scattered throughout the park, there are also stone sculptural elements, such as sets of columns, and remnants of old well covers, which evoke the farms that once existed on this site. Even the urban furniture, such as the benches, was designed by landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, reflecting aesthetic and functional care in every detail of the space.
