Lapa dos Esteios is located in the town of Lages, in the municipality of Coimbra, strategically positioned on the left bank of the Mondego River. This place is distinguished by its landscape, offering a view of the city of Coimbra and the river's course. It is integrated into the grounds of the former Quinta das Canas, a 17th-century property that lends a particular setting to the space.
This place is recognized as a mythical point of Coimbra's legend, once a refuge for gatherings of intellectuals and poets. For about a century, Lapa dos Esteios was the stage for meetings and a source of inspiration, attracting figures such as António Feliciano de Castilho, a notable student from Coimbra. The atmosphere of the place, marked by the scent of orange groves and the murmur of the Mondego, captivated its visitors. It is a space so rooted in local culture that even the well-known fado "Saudades de Coimbra" references it, with the verses: "From Choupal to Lapa / Coimbra was my love / The shadow of my cloak / Fell on the ground, bloomed into flowers".
In addition to its historical and poetic value, Lapa dos Esteios offers an environment of rare natural and artistic beauty. The site features carefully designed gardens, punctuated by various plant species and abundant riverside vegetation that follows the riverbanks. A sumptuous gate marks the entrance to a plane tree grove, where the Fonte da Primavera (Spring Fountain), dating from the 17th century, is located. Among the foliage, it is possible to discover a set of statues of great aesthetic value, some with their backs to the city, evoking figures such as Fortaleza (Fortress), Diogenes, and Asia, and others older that symbolize Faith, Hope, Charity, and Death. This combination of lush nature and sculptural elements creates a space for contemplation.
