Casa das Tecedeiras is located in Janeiro de Cima, one of the charming Schist Villages that dot the landscape of the municipality of Fundão. The space is situated in the heart of this locality, characterized by its traditional schist constructions. Its location offers visitors a tranquil environment, allowing for an immersion in the authenticity of rural life and the natural beauty of Beira Baixa.
This place is a center dedicated to the preservation and development of the ancient art of linen weaving. Casa das Tecedeiras functions as an interpretive space, where those interested can deepen their knowledge about the entire linen cycle, from plant to thread transformed into fabric. It is a living testament to a know-how passed down from generation to generation in the region.
At Casa das Tecedeiras, the richness of tradition meets a contemporary approach to textile design. Visitors have the opportunity to observe local weavers in full activity, operating manual looms. The rhythmic cadence of the working looms forms the soundtrack of this space, revealing the process of creating unique pieces. Outside, a large loom designed for collective work stands out, symbolizing the link between the past and future of this art.
The artisans working at Casa das Tecedeiras are residents of the village itself, holding traditional knowledge that has been enriched with design training. This cross-pollination of knowledge allows them to create a wide range of items, from modern apparel and accessories to home goods and decorative objects. Each item reflects the fusion between ancestral raw material, such as linen, and a contemporary aesthetic, demonstrating the vitality of local craftsmanship.
