The Coimbras Tower or Oriz Tower is located in the former parish of Santa Marinha de Oriz, which is part of the Union of Parishes of Oriz (Santa Marinha) and Oriz (São Miguel), in the municipality of Vila Verde, in the district of Braga, Portugal.
The tower was acquired in 1530 by D. João de Coimbra, abbot of Oriz Santa Marinha, who was also the founder of the Coimbras chapel in Braga, and held the positions of provisor and vicar general of the diocese. Before being purchased by D. João de Coimbra, the tower belonged to D. Tareja, wife of D. João de Sousa, lord of Honra.
The Oriz Tower was classified as a Monument of Public Interest on December 24, 2012.
The tower has a unique architectural style, representative of the time it was built, which makes it an important historical and cultural example of the region.
From the top of the tower, it is possible to appreciate an enchanting panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, with verdant fields and characteristic elements of the region.
A visit to the Coimbras Tower can be combined with a walk through the charming town of Santa Marinha de Oriz and its surroundings, offering tourists the opportunity to discover other attractions and traditions of the Vila Verde region.
