The Chapel of the Supper at Emmaus is situated in Tenões, in the city of Braga, forming part of the monumental complex of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte. Erected on a discreet level, amidst vegetation and small avenues, it is the sixteenth chapel of the Via Sacra (Way of the Cross), concluding the journey with an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation. The natural setting and the view over the mount reinforce the sense of contemplation that characterizes this final stage of the path.
The building harmoniously integrates into the surrounding landscape, maintaining the balance between architectural simplicity and the delicacy of the ornamental details that distinguish it from the other chapels of the sanctuary.
Dated to 1760 and remodeled in 1790, the chapel reflects the 18th-century taste for domestic and welcoming environments, featuring an interior reminiscent of a stately home of that era. On the exterior, the Latin inscription “COGNOVERUNT EUM IN FRACTIONE PANIS” stands out, translated as “They recognized him in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35), evoking the central moment of the episode represented inside.
The façade combines stone and white plaster, with a shaped pediment and discreet pinnacles. The ensemble conveys a sense of sobriety and balance, preserving the symbolic character of the space and its integration with the surrounding nature.
Inside, visitors find a scene inspired by the biblical episode of the Supper at Emmaus, when two disciples, returning home after the crucifixion, recognize the risen Jesus as he breaks the bread. The depiction shows Christ seated at a table with the disciples, in an environment that meticulously recreates the interior of an 18th-century bourgeois home, complete with elegant furniture and a rocaille-style sideboard.
The figures express surprise and reverence at the moment they realize the identity of their guest. The composition, balanced and intimate in tone, invites reflection on faith and the mystery of divine presence in daily life.
The Chapel of the Supper at Emmaus symbolizes spiritual recognition and the revelation of faith after suffering. The interplay of light and shadow inside, coupled with the tranquil surrounding environment, reinforces the feeling of peace and renewal. This episode closes the cycle of Christ's apparitions after the Resurrection, marking the reunion between humanity and hope.
With its elegant simplicity and serene atmosphere, the chapel offers a space for silent contemplation, where art and spirituality unite to evoke one of the most symbolic moments in the Christian tradition.
