The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Madalena da Falperra is located in the Falperra area, east of the city of Braga. Rising to an altitude of approximately 450 meters, the site is nestled in a natural environment, characterized by a forest landscape. This elevated position offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, providing a tranquil atmosphere and direct contact with nature.
This sanctuary is a significant example of the Baroque-Rococo style. Its church, especially the façade, is one of the most emblematic buildings of this era, attributed to the architect André Soares. The façade is distinguished by its decorative opulence, with elaborate granite work featuring undulating forms and exuberant elements. Inside the temple, the Rococo aesthetic is expressively manifested, notably through three remarkable altarpieces, also by André Soares.
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Madalena da Falperra is not limited to just the main church. It is a structured ensemble where built and natural elements intertwine, extending the temple and establishing visual and symbolic relationships. It includes a small quadrangular chapel, known as the "Niche," dedicated to Santa Maria Madalena, located at the beginning of an avenue of cork oaks and oak trees. Further along, a stone cross dated 1775 complements the route. The main access to the church is via a remarkable granite staircase, which incorporates the statue of Santa Maria Madalena and two small twin fountains with shell-shaped basins, all in the Rococo style.
The history of the Falperra Sanctuary begins in the 16th century, with the existence of a small hermitage dedicated to Santa Maria Madalena. Throughout the 18th century, the site underwent significant transformations, acquiring the appearance we know today, largely due to the vision of architect André Soares. The sanctuary became, and still is today, a place of strong religious attraction and a popular pilgrimage destination in the Northern region, testifying to the power of faith and devotion throughout the centuries. Its heritage importance was recognized with its classification as a National Monument in 2017.
