It is located over the Cávado River, connecting the parishes of Pousada (Braga) and Ferreiros, Prozelo and Besteiros (Amares), in the district of Braga.
"Porto" comes from old Galician-Portuguese and means "passage point".
For centuries, it was one of the few crossings of the lower Cávado, essential for the mobility of the region.
Classified since 1910, it preserves its historical and architectural importance.
It is a medieval granite bridge, composed of 11 arches of different sizes and a narrow and irregular deck, with 150 meters in length.
It includes robust cutwaters to resist the river current and open spandrels in the central elements.
It is believed that before its construction there was a Roman crossing in this area, possibly linked to the ancient Via Nova (Geira).
It is said that it was built in a single night by men, with stones brought by women from Terras de Bouro, about 30 km away.
