Located in the municipality of Barcelos, in the locality of Carvalhas, the Penedo Laje dos Sinais is found in the area precisely known as Laje dos Sinais.
This site is situated in a predominantly rural environment surrounded by vegetation, located at the foot of Monte da Saia.
This site features a large granite boulder that stands out in the natural landscape of the area.
On this boulder, marks and symbols were inscribed a long time ago, in a period dating back to Prehistory, more specifically during the Bronze Age.
The surface of this granite boulder exhibits a set of ancient drawings engraved in the stone, known as petroglyphs.
They are primarily geometric shapes, including concentric circles, small cupules, and a swastika, sometimes depicted within a circle. There are also references to the presence of a spiral in other parts of the slab.
Their character and some of their motifs have led researchers to point out possible similarities with rock art from other regions of Europe, such as the British Isles, suggesting cultural connections in Prehistory.
Due to its historical and archaeological relevance, Penedo Laje dos Sinais is officially recognized as cultural heritage.
Since 1951, this site has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, which highlights its importance for understanding the communities that inhabited this region in remote times and ensures its safeguarding.
