The Pillory of Larim is located in the parish of Soutelo, in the municipality of Vila Verde, in the district of Braga, Portugal.
It has been a property of public interest since 1933, witnessing the council's history.
Probably built in the 16th century, the pillory was originally placed in front of the Town Hall, but it was moved to its current location.
Larim was a municipality headquartered in the current parish of Soutelo, integrated into the municipality of Vila Chã and Larim in the early 19th century. It consisted of the parishes of Soutelo, Turiz and a small part of Lage.
On October 6, 1514, King Dom Manuel I granted a charter to Larim, along with other neighboring municipalities: Vila Chã and Penela, all belonging to the House of Bragança.
The peculiarity of the charter is that Dom Manuel I did not impose such heavy rents and taxes compared to other municipalities under other lords. The taxes were related to the agricultural crops of the time, and the charter mentions the rents paid by the royal estates that the king allowed to be cultivated on Saint Martin's Day.
The Pillory of Larim is a valuable piece of local heritage, representing an important period in the region's history.
Tourists have the opportunity to explore an ancient architectural element, which played a significant role in the governance and daily life of the community.
The pillory offers an insight into the administrative organization and relationship with the Portuguese crown in the 16th century.
In addition to the historical attraction, Larim's location amidst rural landscapes invites visitors to discover the natural beauty of the region.
A visit to the Pillory of Larim can be combined with a trip to the town of Vila Verde, allowing tourists to enjoy other local attractions.
