Bom Jesus Park is located in the area of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, on the outskirts of the city of Braga. It is situated on the slope of the hill where the Sanctuary is built, sharing its natural and scenic surroundings.
The creation of the park dates back to the early 19th century. Around 1806, vacant land in the vicinity of the Bom Jesus church was ceded to the entity responsible for the sanctuary. This cession allowed for the transformation of the area, which began to be developed into a green and landscaped space, as we know it today.
After the land was ceded, trees were planted and clearings were created. A considerably sized artificial lake was built, and paths and terraces were designed, shaping the landscape. Subsequently, some artificial grottoes, made using cement, were also added.
Currently, the park offers a vast wooded area, conducive to moments of tranquility and contact with nature. Visitors will find various trails and paths that invite leisurely walks, discovering the nooks and crannies of the space. The environment is enriched by the presence of several gardens and an artificial lake that stands out in the landscape.
The park's structure, with its terraces, winding paths, and grottoes, contributes to a diverse and interesting scenery to explore, providing a walking experience in a carefully crafted natural environment.
