Bridge Park

Category: Nature > Park

District: Braga > Braga > Braga > Urbanização Bracara Augusta

Location

Parque da Ponte is set within the urban fabric of Braga, located at the end of Avenida da Liberdade. It represents a green lung in the central area of the city, offering a peaceful contrast to the surrounding urban environment.

This space is located in the parish of Braga (São Lázaro), in an area that combines residential and leisure zones, providing an accessible meeting point for those exploring the city of Braga.

Origin and Historical Evolution

The history of Parque da Ponte dates back to the early 20th century. The space was created from the expropriation of land that once belonged to Quinta da Mitra, the property of the Archbishops of Braga.

Its name originates from an old medieval bridge that, crossing the Este River, served as a passage to the Guimarães region. Interestingly, the stones from this ancient crossing were reused in the construction of later bridges, perpetuating its presence. Over time, the park has evolved, becoming the multifaceted space seen today, a result of interventions that sought to preserve its character while adapting it to the needs of urban leisure and recreation.

The Two Sides of the Park

Parque da Ponte is divided into two distinct areas, each with its own character. The outer part, considered the oldest, developed around the Chapel of São João. This side is traditionally associated with the São João festivities, serving as the main stage for Braga's traditional festivals.

Separated from the former by a historic railing, originally part of the old Public Garden of Avenida Central, is the inner part. This section is distinguished by its denser vegetation and a large artificial lake that is one of its central features, inviting a more serene atmosphere.

Memories in Stone and Art

One of the most unique aspects of the outer part of the park is the presence of various architectural and sculptural elements from demolished buildings in Braga, such as the old Convento dos Remédios and the Municipal Market. While strolling through this area, one can find stones, columns, capitals, and sculptures that have been repurposed, gaining a new life as an integral part of the park's landscape.

Noteworthy pieces include fragments from the Convento dos Remédios transformed into benches, decorative columns and pinnacles, or sculptures like the one popularly known as "Diabo Manquinho". The park also houses a stone arch that belonged to the old Fish Market and a cross with an inscription evoking the memory of a hospital for plague patients in the 16th century, testifying to its rich historical tapestry.

Nature, Leisure, and Biodiversity

The inner part of the park offers an environment more focused on nature and quiet leisure. Besides the large artificial lake, around which there is a path, this area is characterized by the presence of a remarkable diversity of tree species. Here, native trees coexist with specimens from different parts of the world, such as the Port Orford Cedar or the Sequoia.

This space invites moments of relaxation, providing lawns and wooded areas ideal for strolling and enjoying the atmosphere. It also includes an open-air auditorium and areas dedicated to children, making it a versatile place for various activities and for the enjoyment of different age groups.
