The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães is located in the parish of Mire de Tibães, in the municipality of Braga, Portugal.
Founded in the 11th century, the monastery underwent reconstructions and was occupied by the Benedictine congregation from the 12th century onwards. In the 16th century, it became the motherhouse of the Order for Portugal and Brazil.
The complex includes the Church of Tibães and the Tibães Cross. The main current buildings were built in the 17th and 18th centuries, featuring the work of architect André Soares.
The complex was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1944, guaranteeing its preservation and historical importance.
After the extinction of male religious orders in 1834, the monastery was sold at public auction, except for the church, sacristy, and cemetery cloister. In 1986, the Portuguese State acquired the monastery and initiated a recovery process. Currently, a religious community is installed in a wing of the monastery.
Since 2010, the monastery has a guesthouse with 9 rooms and a restaurant called "Eau Vive de Tibães", with capacity for 50 people.
The monastery houses a museum that preserves a fragment of the valuable collection it gathered throughout its history. Although most of the collection was lost after the sale of the property in 1834, the museum presents pieces related to the history of the monastery and the Benedictine congregation. In addition, it is possible to walk the "Museum Trail", which allows you to appreciate the area surrounding the monastery, its architecture, ruins of previous buildings, woods, gardens, and agricultural fields.
The monastery was relevant in the Portuguese Empire and played an important role in the history of the region. Its visit provides an opportunity to learn about religious architecture and appreciate the sacred art preserved on site.
The monastery was chosen as the venue for the XXIII Iberian Summit held in January 2008, due to its unique characteristics and architectural beauty.
In January 2015, the Assembly of the Republic recommended to the Government the classification of the Monastery of Tibães as a national monument, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
