The Casas das Gelosias, also known as Casas dos Crivos, are located in the parish of Braga (São José de São Lázaro and São João do Souto), in the city and municipality of Braga, in Portugal.
The Casas dos Crivos have been considered a Property of Public Interest since 1971.
The Casas dos Crivos are located on Rua de São Marcos, 37-41, one of the streets created during the urban reform promoted by Bishop D. Diogo de Sousa in the 16th century.
The Casas dos Crivos are composed of two buildings with facades covered in wooden structures, known as gelosias, which conceal the windows. This characteristic makes them unique and representative of a housing typology common in Braga between the 17th and 18th centuries.
The main facade is completely covered by gelosias, wooden structures that cover the windows. This architectural style was adopted in the 17th century due to the climate of strong religiosity in Braga, giving the city an appearance similar to a Muslim city.
The facade has three doors on the first floor, separated by pillars and with wooden shutters. On the upper floors, there are rótulas or gelosias, which are the most characteristic element of the houses. This architecture reflects the climate of deep religiosity of the time, conveying a sense of seclusion.
Currently, only one example of the Casas dos Crivos has been preserved. It was acquired by the Braga City Council in 1984 and restored to house a temporary exhibition space, a support auditorium, and two educational service rooms. The place has a public use of a cultural nature.
