The Casa do Território is located in Vila Nova de Famalicão, in a large urban green space next to the river Pelhe, in the Antas area. It is close to the city center, surrounded by pedestrian paths, lawns, and trees, with open views of the riverside landscape.
The building sits on a gentle slope and relates to the exterior through terraces and paths that invite a tranquil stroll before or after the visit. The surroundings combine natural areas and traces of the urban fabric, creating a serene and airy environment.
Inaugurated in two thousand and eleven, the Casa do Território was conceived as a place for dialogue and learning about Vila Nova de Famalicão and its region. The objective is to stimulate knowledge of the territory, civic participation, and reflection on the common future, valuing local identity.
The space has an auditorium and exhibition areas that host permanent and temporary projects. The activities cross geography, history, architecture, society, culture, economy, and environment, bringing together audiences of different ages and origins.
The ensemble results from the recovery of old rural constructions articulated by a contemporary body. The lines are simple, the interiors are spacious and very bright, with large openings that extend the gaze to the landscape. The integration into the topography is discreet and respects the natural character of the place.
Inside, a clear and functional atmosphere is felt, suitable for exhibitions and meetings. The materiality and natural light reinforce the idea of continuity between inside and outside, highlighting the relationship between culture and nature that defines the spirit of the House.
The permanent exhibition Time, Space and Being. Territory. Vila Nova de Famalicão occupies the lower floor and is organized into three thematic axes: water, routes and flows, people and relationships. It brings together documents, objects, games, and interactive tables, including a model of the municipality and oral histories with testimonies from inhabitants.
Among the featured pieces is the Pedra Formosa from Alto das Eiras, the most significant symbol of local archaeology. The tour also includes film records, such as the documentary Famalicão by Manoel de Oliveira, alongside temporary exhibitions that address contemporary art, memory, and environmental issues, as well as an interactive map that allows exploration of the municipality's institutions and personalities.
