Situated in Braga, this chapel stands isolated atop a small hill in the eastern part of the city. The location is particularly interesting for being adjacent to Cividade Hill, an area historically linked to the origins of the Roman city of Bracara Augusta. The chapel is accessed via a stone staircase that crosses a walled square, creating a tranquil environment with some olive trees in its surroundings.
The connection to Saint Sebastian in this area of Braga dates back to ancient times, with references to a confraternity dedicated to the saint as early as the 14th century. However, the chapel visited today is predominantly a construction from the early 18th century. The project that shaped the current building was drafted in 1715, and the chapel was completed and blessed in 1717, marking a new phase in the history of this place of worship.
The Chapel of São Sebastião stands out for its architecture, integrated into the Baroque style. Its main plan is notably centered and octagonal (with eight sides), which gives it a distinctive configuration. The central octagonal body is flanked by a rectangular chancel and, at the rear, a quadrangular bell tower. The main façade, facing the access, features a portal with an interrupted pediment, pilasters, and decorative finials such as pinnacles.
The interior of the chapel is particularly rich in detail, with the major highlight being the tile panels that cover the walls. These blue and white tiles, dated 1717, visually narrate the life and martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. In addition to the tilework, the interior space is complemented by elements such as carved altarpieces, pulpits, and stuccoed ceilings, which include paintings with religious symbolism, adding layers of artistic interest to the visit.
