Located in the town of Castro Verde, in the district of Beja, the Royal Basilica was built in the 16th century in honor of the Battle of Ourique. It replaced a previous church and underwent reconstruction work in the 18th century.
The church is a large building, easily visible in the center of the town. It has a facade with three tiers and two imposing bell towers. The interior features a single nave, decorated with around sixty thousand typical 18th-century tiles.
The building houses a museum center called the Treasure of the Royal Basilica. There, visitors can admire various sacred pieces from the municipality, including the reliquary head of Saint Fabian, a monstrance, and an image of Saint Barbara.
In 2019, a major restoration program was initiated in the church, mainly focused on the roof and the painted ceiling. After the works, the basilica was reopened to the public in 2023.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição has been a Monument of Public Interest since 1993 and was elevated to the category of National Monument in 2023. It is considered one of the main monuments of the Diocese of Beja and a landmark of the municipality of Castro Verde.
The basilica was built on the site of a previous church dedicated to Saint Mary. It is believed to have been the central point of Castro Verde and to have influenced the development of the town.
In 1969, the basilica was damaged by an earthquake, but subsequently underwent repairs and conservation.
Tourists can explore the basilica and appreciate its architecture, interior decoration, and the Treasure of the Royal Basilica. It is a place of interest for lovers of sacred art and religious history.
