Located in the vast and tranquil Alentejo landscape, the Hermitage of Santa Margarida stands in the area of São João de Negrilhos, municipality of Aljustrel. It is isolated on Monte de São João, a few kilometers from the locality, immersed in a rural and serene environment. This positioning offers an authentic perspective of the deeper Alentejo, far from the hustle and bustle, where silence and the vastness of the horizon mark the experience of a visit.
The Hermitage of Santa Margarida has its roots in the 16th century, although its exact construction date is unknown. Over the centuries, it played a significant role as a place of devotion and pilgrimage, especially on the day dedicated to Saint Margaret, July 20th. Its history is marked by a challenging moment in 1755, when the great earthquake that shook Portugal caused considerable damage to the structure. However, the resilience and faith of the local community ensured its survival, with restoration works carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, allowing it to remain a cultural and spiritual landmark.
This hermitage is a representative example of rural religious architecture in the Alentejo, with popular interpretations of Mannerist style influences. Its construction is longitudinal, consisting of a simple rectangular nave and a square-plan chancel, slightly narrower. The main facade, oriented south, features a sober stone portal, topped by a lintel and an oculus that allows natural light to enter. Robust buttresses are observed on the side walls, providing stability to the structure. Inside, a perfect round arch separates the nave, covered by a wooden ceiling, from the chancel, which is distinguished by its dome-shaped roof. The altar, built of masonry, and the simple wooden fixture, reveal the simplicity and depth of its sacred use.
