Carmo Church

Location

The Carmo Church is located in the heart of Cuba's historic center. It is integrated into the complex of the former Carmo convent, connecting directly to the building on the west side. It is surrounded to the north and east by lands that belonged to the convent's vegetable garden and by a cobbled courtyard, contributing to the area's ambiance.

Its Origins

The Carmo Church was the ninth church to be built in the town of Cuba. Its construction is due to the initiative of Pedro Fialho and his wife, who were devotees of Our Lady of Carmo and commissioned the image of the Saint in Lisbon in 1650. Having no children, they expressed the wish that the Saint would be their sole heir, and that a church be erected in her honor.

Although the initial intention was to create a convent for friars, a vision of Pedro Fialho's wife led to the establishment of a community of women, the first of whom arrived from Lisbon, belonging to the Third Order of Carmo. The founders of the church are buried in this location.

Evolution and Architecture

The building we see today resulted from several phases of construction and improvement, which extended throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1682, the Dean of Portalegre Cathedral played an important role, financing the construction of several dependencies in the old convent, such as the rectangular cloister with round arcades, which is still part of the adjacent complex today.

The church, connected to this building, features a two-story facade, marked by vertical pilasters. On the ground floor, three stone portals stand out, the central one being the largest, and on the upper floor, above them, large windows protected by wrought iron grilles open. The church's volumetry is notable, with the main body higher than the chancel, topped by cornerstones and an element at the apex with a cross.

Interior Details

Upon entering the church, visitors will find notable elements inside. The nave, with a rectangular plan, is covered by a barrel vault. On one of the side walls, a large fresco painting depicting Saint Christopher can be observed, and there is also a wooden pulpit. Two stone holy water fonts, with details reminiscent of the Manueline style, are located near the entrance.

The chancel is separated from the nave by a triumphal arch with a marbled finish. In it, the barrel vault is decorated with illusionistic painting. The chancel walls, stuccoed, also feature marble-imitating paint, and frescoed medallions depicting the figures of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist stand out.

The altarpiece of the high altar is a rich piece of gilded and polychrome carving, mixing Baroque and Rococo styles, with Solomonic columns and figures of angels. In a deep niche, there is an image of a Crucified Christ, locally known as "Lord of the Afflicted," in a space decorated with frescoes of vegetal motifs. There are also two side altars, cornered and with Rococo carving, dedicated to Saint Joseph and Our Lady of Necessities.

Current Status

Currently, the Carmo Church has served as the town's mortuary chapel. The old adjacent convent building has been adapted to house the local Misericórdia's nursing home, maintaining the physical connection with the church.
