The Oliveira Lopes School Museum is located in the town of Válega, part of the municipality of Ovar. It is situated in the area known as Roçadas de Espinhos, on a street that honors its founders, the Oliveira Lopes Brothers.
This museum occupies a historic building, inaugurated in 1910, shortly before the establishment of the Portuguese Republic. Its construction was made possible thanks to the support of two brothers, José and Manuel José Oliveira Lopes, who returned from distant lands after making their fortune. At the time, the primary school stood out for its notable presence and the quality of its architecture, designed for comfort and functionality. The building also featured a main facade with rich decorative elements.
The property housing the museum underwent significant rehabilitation works in 2019, ensuring the preservation of its original structure and characteristics.
Inside the museum, there is a valuable collection that transports visitors to the school environment of past decades. It includes furniture and a wide range of materials that served to teach and entertain children in the region since 1910. These are pieces with significant historical and patrimonial value, showing what primary education was like at that time and in the region.
The main objective of the Oliveira Lopes School Museum is to keep alive the memory of the primary schools that operated here and to honor their benefactors. Through its collection and research, it seeks to disseminate the evolution of primary education in Portugal, contributing to the understanding of the social and cultural heritage linked to the school and the local community.
