Teatro Aveirense is located on Rua 31 de Janeiro and Rua de Belém do Pará, in the parish of Glória and Vera Cruz, in Aveiro, Portugal.
It has been considered a Property of Public Interest since 2002, standing out for its historical and cultural importance.
It was built from 1854, when the Aveiro City Council acquired land for the construction of a new theater. The works faced financial difficulties and were only completed in 1881.
The theater was inaugurated in 1881, and in 1882 it had its first play staged by the D. Maria II National Theatre Company.
Over the years, Teatro Aveirense has hosted theater, music, dance and opera shows, with national and international companies.
After 1910, the theater underwent adaptation and modernization works, being reopened in 1912 with the inclusion of a cinematograph room. In 1949, after a new reformulation, its capacity was increased to more than a thousand seats.
In 1998, Teatro Aveirense was acquired by the Aveiro City Council to preserve its historical and heritage value. Since then, it has undergone renovation works to adapt to current needs and requirements.
In February 2021, a new phase of renovation began at the theater, with investment from the Aveiro City Council. This undertaking covers the conservation of infrastructures, equipment and modernization of communication means.
Teatro Aveirense reopened on October 23, 2003, after previous renovation work.
The theater continues to offer a diverse program, with quality shows in different artistic areas, providing enriching cultural experiences for visitors to Aveiro.
